BOOK PUBLISHING|COLLABORATION:

-A BOOK OF IDEAS [Time& Space] 2013-14,(collaborative editorial): A Book of Ideas is a collaborative platform that I create around the ideas that circulate my work. I invited curator, Jose Roca, to collaborate and choose 7-9 artists. The aim is to create a non-fixed structure to generate an experience on materiality, medium, illusion, time, memory, place and space. And use the components of a book as a metaphor of an inter-weaved community working on similar ideas, yet with distinct perspectives.

INSTALLATIONS:

<img src="http://payload124.cargocollective.com/1/6/196122/4789443/MONIKA_BRAVO_theobjectofperception.png" width="670" height="120" width_o="1407" height_o="252" src_o="http://payload124.cargocollective.com/1/6/196122/4789443/MONIKA_BRAVO_theobjectofperception_o.png" data-mid="27148707" border="0" align="left"/>
-THE OBJECT OF PERCEPTION 2013, (an exercise on materiality; installation): By creating a sensorial experience in the space (gallery) to unveil the intricacy of perception as an object.

WEAVING TIME, WEAVING TIME a proposal for a new time-based piece, the idea of weaving as an abstract and ancient language* used by all primitive cultures to connect, depict and define their relationship to nature. I am interested in the idea of physicality of various painterly techniques such as layering, assemblage, collage, superimposition, cutting, pasting, color, etc and how I can achieve it through intangible means by considering the limitless quality of the already formatted screen and imagining it as an endless canvas. In this case, the 'idea' of the material (the thread. the loom, the act of weaving) takes "form" using the immateriality of the time-based footage as "material". The act of the physical weaving becomes the base of the narrative frame by frame, no longer as an act of screen contemplation but integrating the viewer by enveloping her in the act of weaving.

* The term Text is derived from the Latin word, texare, for weaving.

-YIELD _EK (light sculptures): An object of experience, a light sculpture inspired by Ellsworth Kelly’s exploration of “controlled random”. Interested in his view of painting as an object where he fractures the fluidity of his strokes by cutting the canvas and rearranging them to create a pattern. The light sculptures are to capture the limits of rigid materials that I use and their point of rupture highlighting this process of materiality through the concept of yielding, an act of relinquishing where strength is gained. The resulting shape is malleable and the pattern alludes to the rhythmic and repetitive line-strokes of Kelly’s painterly gestures.

-LANDSCAPE OF BELIEF_ENGRAVINGS (digital drawings on glass/mirror): is an offshoot of a time-based projection sculpture under the same name, transformed into engravings on layered glass where Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities text has been transformed into skylines about real/imaginary landscapes.

- LIQUID_WALL, 2013 (time-based circular painting): a moving impressionistic painting of the reflection of water, the residue of oil from the marina, and its surrounding man-made environment simultaneously evoking a beautiful and unsettling image. Liquid Wall is a continuation of a previous commissioned project, Breathing Wall at the Tom Bradley International Terminal in the Los Angeles Airport LAX

::::::::::::::::::

UPCOMING PUBLIC COMMISSIONS:

- TIME WILL TELL (Public Commission, PS 314, Queens) an installation of multiple layered panels in the atrium of PS 314 in Queens about the transformation of space, specifically from landscape to cityscape.

-AN INTERVAL OF TIME(Public Commission University of Texas) A painterly abstraction of geoscientific images to represent the relationship between science and art.

::::::::::::::::::

WORKSHOP:

<img src="http://payload124.cargocollective.com/1/6/196122/4789443/MONIKA_BRAVO_thewell.png" width="670" height="156" width_o="1388" height_o="325" src_o="http://payload124.cargocollective.com/1/6/196122/4789443/MONIKA_BRAVO_thewell_o.png" data-mid="27148709" border="0" align="left"/>
- THE WELL (3 day workshop on creativity and its source):

Wisdom that is not put into practical use is meaningless. The well supplies replenishment but is never exhausted, water in a stream is a gift of nature, water in a well results from the accomplishments of human beings, all the underground streams are there, but without digging the water is wasted.
-I Ching hexagram #48

THE WELL: A guide to the practice of observation and how to get in touch with the source of your own creativity.
The Well, is designed for anyone in the community – artists and non artists alike (mothers, housewives, artists, photographers, writers, all are welcome). The workshop will expand upon the lecture’s theme of process and intuition and will explore, in depth, the process Bravo uses as an artist to create her work. She will teach you a set of exercises that, if practiced with certain frequency, will help you develop your own personal creative tools.

:::::::::::::::
:::::::::::::::

-THE UNCOMFORTABLE IDEA OF BEAUTY, 2013, (curatorial exhibition & panel): an exhibition in about the current state of beauty in relation to surface & artist’s agenda.

ESSENCE Links your experience to the essence of ingredients directly from local farms, which regenerates and reconnects your perception to an ancient form of nutrition and healthy living.

The base of the menu is bone marrow stock, chicken feet stock + local seasonal ingredients. Based on ancient recipes that are rich in nutrients and transformed as a delicious expericience to the senses. All livestock, bone marrow, lard and short ribs came from Kinderhook farm in NY, other ingredients from local farms obtained at the union square farmer's market.

The Menu, Tablecloth and Light sculptures were all created for the PALADAR experience based on bone marrow recipes and histology images.

LANDSCAPE OF BELIEF_Engravings,
2012
installation view @ artist studio
12 x 18 x 6"
engraved glass & mirror, aluminum base,
texts from italo calvino Invisible cities

Landscape of Belief_engravings, is a continuation of the sculptural time-based installation under the same name that calls into question how we construct our lives according to our belief systems. The viewer experiences the piece as an image created with engraved text that is floating diaphanously in glass panels. These texts that generate skylines of real/imaginary landscapes are culled from Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, (both a dialogue and description of illusory cities between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan). By carefully overlapping surfaces, texts and cartographies, a rich non material space of emptiness is achieved throughout the time-based composition. The sculpture presents nothingness as an object thus allowing for the space of the metaphysical to challenge the viewer.

texts from italo calvino Invisible cities

"Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny."
— Mahatma Gandhi

Landscape of Belief is a sculptural time-based installation that calls into question how we construct our lives according to our belief systems. The viewer experiences the piece as an image created with projected text that is floating diaphanously in glass panels.

I first came upon the idea for the piece after I encountered the title for an exhibition:“Textural landscapes”, I envisioned a space covered with layers of dynamic landscape, as thoughts become actions these define destinies as Gandhi notes above. I thought of text as the potentiality of form; as the space in between, the vehicle of infinite probabilities, not so much as direct meaning, but as abstraction and embodiment of the possibilities of the mind. My intention is to create a parallel between literature and architecture, as they both define, translate and shape physical and mind structures. As the viewer is immersed in the projection, she is given the opportunity to experience the prospect of awareness, of the power of their belief systems and how they define the landscape of their lives. I am also interested in the transparency, the emptiness of space and its potential as the things that are yet to come.

What is imperative for Landscape of Belief is the necessity for it to be experienced. No documentation will ever be able to transmit the feeling of the texts floating on the surface of the materials, or the possibility of viewing the sculpture from both sides. It took three years in the making and addresses two important issues in the trajectory of my work, such as the shifting definition of the medium and the physical manifestation of the piece. As seen in this work, for the first time I generated the images solely by drawing. I used the graphic animators (the assistants) as an extension of my brain, they translated my visual ideas into form. The process began with finding the images in google and then recomposing the city’s skyline by meticulously outlining and tracing their architectural components with Calvino’s text. The sculptural aspect is also critical in this work, for I am allowing the materials to become present and centered in the space, expressing my own willingness to expose vulnerability as strength.

"This -- some say -- confirms the hypothesis that each man bears in its mind a city made only of differences, a city without figures and without form, and the individual cities fill it up."
— I. Calvino

BREATHING_WALL_UC
2010
Urban Canvas Design Competition.

In 2010, I was one of the four winners of the Urban Canvas Design Competition. The New York City Department of Buildings and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, partnered to create this unique competition. I created Breathing_Wall_UC, a printed artwork for a temporary protective structure at a construction site to beautify New York City's streetscape and promote maintenance of these structures. Breathing_Wall_UC was installed temporarily in Sept. 2011 at City Point, 1 Dekalb Avenue in Brooklyn NY. The images of this piece were based on the video piece for the LAX but rendered into a more abstract and graphic form.
