LANDSCAPE OF BELIEF
2012
Interactive time-based installation

"Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny."
— Mahatma Gandhi

Landscape of belief is an interactive time base installation that calls into question how we construct our lives according to our belief systems. An experience employing literary texts that float transparently around as the viewers become active participants and shift the landscape in it. These texts that generate skylines of real/imaginary landscapes are culled from Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, (both a dialogue and description of illusory cities between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan). By carefully overlapping surfaces, texts and cartographies, a non material space of emptiness is achieved throughout the room, displaying nothingness as an object thus allowing for the space of the metaphysical to enclose the viewer.
I first came upon the idea for the piece after I encountered the title for the exhibition Textural landscapes, I envisioned a space covered with layers of dynamic landscape, it’s motion would be akin to a magnet, as thoughts become actions these define destinies as gandhi notes above; I thought of text as the potentiality of form; as the space in between, the vehicle of infinite probabilities, not so much as direct meaning, but as abstraction and embodiment of the possibilities of the mind. My intention is to create a parallel between literature and architecture, as they both define, translate and shape physical and mind structures. As the viewers are immersed in the projections, they are given the opportunity to experience the prospect of becoming aware of the power of their belief systems and how they define the landscape of their lives. I am also interested in the empty space in between the words, it’s potential as the things that are to come.
"This -- some say -- confirms the hypothesis that each man bears in is mind a city made only of differences, a city without figures and without form, and the individual cities fill it up." I. Calvino

BREATHING_WALL_UC
2010
Urban Canvas Design Competition.

In 2010, I was one of the four winners of the Urban Canvas Design Competition. The New York City Department of Buildings and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, partnered to create this unique competition. I created Breathing_Wall_UC, a printed artwork for a temporary protective structure at a construction site to beautify New York City's streetscape and promote maintenance of these structures. Breathing_Wall_UC was installed temporarily in Sept. 2011 at City Point, 1 Dekalb Avenue in Brooklyn NY. The images of this piece were based on the video piece for the LAX but rendered into a more abstract and graphic form.

AN INTERVAL OF TIME_UTA
2012
Time-based installation on a 6ft sphere

Landmarks has commissioned a time-based installation for the University of Texas at Austin's public art collection. The video will be projected from within a six-foot spherical screen located in the Jackson School of Geoscience’s new student center. The unveiling will coincide with the opening of the student center in July 2012.

By culling visual material from the geoscience school such as weather patterns, seismological charts, modelings for geohazards along with other non geological data, I will transform this information into painterly abstractions of poetic quality, thus creating a juxtaposition between the scientific and imaginary frameworks. I will compose a dynamic database that consists of a number of time base non linear variations (5-10), these independent clips will load randomly at different intervals and will be cyclical in nature with specific durations. I am interested in the correlation between the landscape’s point of view or consciousness and the human mind’s way to understand nature (charts, modelings, patterns).

TIME WILL TELL, QUEENS PS IS 314,
Photographic-installation
multiple murals on glass suspended on the ceiling of the Atrium.
digital renderings from original proposal subject to change

I am interested in the transformation of space: from landscape to cityscape, shaped first by nature through creeks, hills, marshes and reshaped by migration, language, distance and culture. the visual form is that of layered planes simile of a hologram the layers of information gathered by time, spaces divided by mind, places shaped by emotions and people.

SO FAR AWAY YET SO CLOSE,
Photographic-installation
2011
Archival pigment print on glass, aluminum ledge
12 x 72 x 3.
edition of 3

In SO FAR AWAY YET SO CLOSE, I am interested on exploring the limitations and boundaries created by man’s ideologies, The political view of the borders that divide nations takes the perspective from the landscape’s point of view. Nature is unaware of conflict because is void of mind, it does not know the difference between north, south, east and west, because landscape IS, a mountain is a mountain, a river is a river and they behave as such.

For this piece, I thought of the possibilities of walking the geographical border without limitations, I walked virtually along the US/Mexico border via GOOGLE earth appropriating photographs from users posted along the map and overlaying them with satellite images of the same locations. I created a long strip of timeless images only land, no fences, no bridges, nor patrols. just landscape. These natural landscapes are traced with imaginary lines that create political borders, also create differences, conflict that divide cultures. it enforces radicalism, closeness and fosters fear-

Filmed in the lapse of five years, moving images of crowds in public spaces are distorted through a lens; treated as a canvas, the video format is then cut and paste weaving layers of different periods and places resulting in a color field composition of intervals of time within a space. Patterns of abstract sequences are layered and weaved into the idea of an infinite canvas (surface) that breathes.

La Ilaha Illa’llah (2009-2010), an ongoing series currently in 4 parts: Tornado, Volcano, mudslide and Wild Fires. Drawn from appropriated footage of natural disasters found on the Internet, La Ilaha Illa’llah transforms the images into a succession of painterly eruptions, demonstrating the power of beauty even at times of calamity and chaos, as suggested by eighteenth-century philosopher Edmund Burke’s concept of the sublime. The title of the work derives from an account from the life of thirteenth-century Sufi poet Rumi, who was described as whirling in devotion to Allah, chanting “la illa-ha illa’illah” until he fell into a trance of deep worship.
